Can Practicing Gratitude Transform the Workplace?

Volume I, Edition 24

The Talent Compass: Can Practicing Gratitude Transform the Workplace?

Gratitude is a powerful force that can positively impact many areas of our lives, including our workplaces. When we practice gratitude, we are more likely to feel happier, more satisfied, and more fulfilled. In the workplace, this can lead to increased productivity, better communication, and stronger relationships among colleagues.

One way to cultivate gratitude in the workplace is to express appreciation for the efforts and contributions of others. This can be done through simple gestures such as saying “thank you”, or giving a compliment. Another way is to create a culture of gratitude by encouraging team members to share what they are grateful for on a regular basis. And research has shown that practicing gratitude can also improve our mental and physical health.

Starbucks is once again showing businesses how to take care of their employees in this new job climate.

Starbucks has announced that they’ve increased US hourly wages and added other benefits for non union workers

While they are increasing pay and benefits for most U.S. hourly workers, unionized employees are excluded from certain perks, amid ongoing tensions with the Workers United union, which is attempting to organize Starbucks stores. At least 366 U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since 2021, according to the National Labor Relations Board.

The company plans to raise wages, with varying percentages based on years of service, starting January 1, 2024. Employees at both union and non-union locations having worked four years or less will see raises of 3% or 4% depending on years of service. This move conflicts with a September ruling by an NLRB judge, who deemed Starbucks’ previous pay increase for non-union workers illegal. Starbucks has appealed

As for benefits, Starbucks plans to shorten the time hourly employees must work before accruing vacation days from 1 year to 90 days as well as a North American barista championship for U.S. and Canadian employees. These benefits are also available only to workers at non-unionized locations.

We plan to stay on top of the goings-on at Starbucks. As they are working towards these changes for their employees they are providing a positive example for other businesses to follow in keeping their labor forces happy.
